On Tuesday, September 2, 2025, the College of Science, Technology and Applied Arts of Trinidad and Tobago (COSTAATT) officially welcomed its newest cohort of students during the annual New Student Orientation, which took place simultaneously at the City Campus in Port of Spain, the South Campus in San Fernando, and the Tobago Campus.
This year’s orientation was hosted under the theme “COSTAATT Nation – Connect, Explore, Contribute,” reflecting the institution’s focus on building a strong, united student community while encouraging exploration, collaboration, and meaningful contribution.
The programme was guided by Dr. Helen Williams-Cumberbatch, Vice President of Student Affairs, who served as Master of Ceremonies. In her opening remarks, she underscored the importance of orientation as the foundation for students’ success, urging them to take full advantage of the resources and networks available at the College.
COSTAATT President, Dr. Keith Nurse, delivered the official welcome. He encouraged students to embrace what he described as “Power Skills”, communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking, which, alongside their academic studies, will help shape them into confident, empathetic, and career-ready graduates. Dr. Nurse also highlighted COSTAATT’s 25th anniversary, noting that over the past two and a half decades the College has built a strong legacy of producing graduates who are leaders across sectors such as healthcare, business, technology, education, and the arts.
Students were also welcomed by Mr. Daniel Ramoutar, President of the COSTAATT Student Council, who spoke about the value of active student leadership and representation in shaping campus life. His remarks encouraged new students to see themselves not only as learners, but as contributors to the COSTAATT Nation.
Informative presentations from the IT Department, the Bursar, and the Registrar were shared via video, giving students practical guidance on the systems, services, and procedures essential to their academic journey.
A highlight of the day was a motivational address by Muhammad Muwakil, poet, and musician from the renowned group Freetown Collective. Speaking directly to the students, Muwakil shared words of encouragement, urging them to pursue their studies with courage, creativity, and purpose, and to see education as a powerful tool for transformation, both personally and nationally.
Closing the programme, Mr. Ian Carter, Director of Student Life and Athletics, stressed the importance of holistic development, encouraging students to take part in extracurricular activities, leadership opportunities, and sports as a complement to their academic work.
The orientation marked the beginning of a new academic year continuing COSTAATT’s journey of innovation and growth. As Dr. Nurse reminded students, they are now part of the College’s 25-year legacy, and will play a vital role in shaping its next chapter through learning, service, and the pursuit of Future Skills.
