The College of Science, Technology and Applied Arts of Trinidad and Tobago (COSTAATT) hosted its in-person Girls in ICT 2026 event under the theme “AI for Development: Girls Shaping the Digital Future” on April 23, 2026, at its South Campus, engaging approximately 200 secondary school students from across Trinidad.
Students from St. Benedict’s College, Point Fortin West Secondary, Corpus Christi College, Diego Martin Central Secondary, Point Fortin East Secondary, Siparia West Secondary and Fyzabad Anglican Secondary participated in a full day of interactive learning designed to introduce them to real-world applications of information and communication technologies (ICT). While the initiative focuses on encouraging young women to pursue ICT pathways, the event also included male students, highlighting the importance of shared participation in building an inclusive digital future.
The event formed part of a two-day series, with virtual sessions held on April 24 that explored cybersecurity as well as the intersection of social media and artificial intelligence, extending the reach of the initiative beyond the in-person experience.
Participants engaged in a range of hands-on sessions led by industry professionals and COSTAATT representatives. A cybersecurity presentation by Precision Cybertechnologies and Digital Solutions Limited introduced students to digital threats and the role of cybersecurity specialists in safeguarding information systems. An “AI as a Superpower” lecture explored the practical uses of artificial intelligence and its growing impact across industries.
Students also participated in an interactive panel featuring female COSTAATT alumni working in ICT, including Anna Lisa Nancoo (Amplia Communications Limited), Reshma Ramrattan (PBS Technologies Limited), Deborah Romero (COSTAATT), and Rochelle Long-Saunders (Freelance ICT Analyst), who shared insights into their professional journeys.
Additional sessions included a coding demonstration focused on three-tier architecture, an introduction to the Internet of Things (IoT), and a networking lecture with a live Q&A, providing exposure to key areas shaping the digital landscape.
Through initiatives such as Girls in ICT, COSTAATT continues to support digital awareness, skills development and greater participation in technology-driven careers.
