COSTAATT VP Student Affairs Dr Helen Williams Cumberbatch introduces senior members of the Student Affairs staff
The COSTAATT New Student Orientation 2024, held on August 28th at Queen’s Hall, St. Ann’s, marked the beginning of a new academic journey for hundreds of incoming students.
Dr. Naseem Koylass, COSTAATT Vice President, Academic Affairs, welcomed the students on behalf of COSTAATT President, Dr. Keith Nurse, encouraging them to connect with their peers, faculty, and staff, and to build lasting relationships. She urged them to explore all that COSTAATT has to offer and to contribute their unique talents to make a positive impact.
Zoe Anné Peters, President of the COSTAATT Student Council, shared her own journey, inspiring the newcomers to make the most of their time at COSTAATT. She emphasised the importance of resilience, creativity, and community, and encouraged students to actively engage in college life and student governance.
Dr. Helen Williams-Cumberbatch, COSTAATT Vice President, Student Affairs, reassured students that they were not alone in their journey. She introduced the dedicated senior staff of the Student Affairs Division, who are committed to providing support and resources to help students thrive. She highlighted various initiatives, including the newly launched “Professional Closet” and the upcoming “Food Insecurity Programme,” designed to support students’ well-being and success.
Ms. Julie Gouveia-Ferguson, Senior Lecturer in Digital Media and Communication, offered a fresh perspective on navigating college life. She encouraged students to embrace collaboration, manage their time effectively, and maintain a healthy balance between academics and personal life.
Ian Carter, Director of Student Life and Athletics, invited students to dive into the full COSTAATT experience by participating in student clubs, athletics, volunteer opportunities, and more. He emphasized the importance of student governance and encouraged everyone to have a voice in shaping their college experience.
The orientation also included engaging video presentations and captivating performances that showcased the creativity and talent within the COSTAATT community. Students were treated to a virtual tour of the campuses, learned about essential services, and enjoyed inspiring spoken word performances by Nicolas Khan and Faith Cheruiyot. The event concluded on a high note with musical performances by the COSTAATT Staff Steel Orchestra, X2C, and Aaliyah Campbell, a COSTAATT student and recent winner of the Ministry of Youth Development and National Service (MYDNS) Youth On Stage 2024.
As the new students embark on their COSTAATT journey, the college looks forward to their future exploits and is committed to supporting them as they strive to fulfil their potential.
