Programme Description

This programme prepares students to be part of the healthcare team by learning how to extract small quantities of blood from patients – newborn to geriatric – for diagnostic, blood typing, and cross matching purposes by venipuncture or dermal puncture. Students will also learn to perform Intravenous (IV) Access. Students will not only be exposed to the different ways of drawing blood but would also be exposed to standard protocol as to the handling and transporting of other biological specimens. They will become knowledgeable in infection control, learning to sterilize equipment as well as clean biological spills. Students will become competent in performing Point of Care Testing, leaning to adhere to quality assurance systems related to phlebotomy.They will become competent in administering first aid as well as learning to take vital sign from patients. They will gain practical experience on various clinical sites which will prepare them for the world of work.
Requirements
Minimum five (5) CSEC/GCE O’ Level subjects, inclusive of English A and Mathematics, Grades 1,2,3* or A, B, C. *Grade 3 accepted if attained in June 1998 and beyond.
