Programme Description
This programme is aimed at training to support the role of the Public Health Inspector in evaluating activities in and around air and sea ports. This includes but is not limited to: monitoring for proper sanitizing and disinfecting, investigating and addressing current and potential health hazards relating to food borne diseases, ensuring that dangerous goods are handled and stored using accepted practices, monitoring supply and quality of water as well as its treatment and storage, vector control and human contamination which are critical to controlling of spread of diseases and prevention of epidemics emanating from foreign countries – all within the parameters of the Quarantine Act and other supporting legislation.
Requirements
Minimum five (5) CSEC/GCE O’ Level subjects, inclusive of English A and Mathematics, Grades 1,2,3* or A, B, C. *Grade 3 accepted if attained in June 1998 and beyond.
An Associate in Applied Science in Environmental Health degree or a NIHERST Diploma in Public Health.
Mature Entry: Applicants 25 years of age and over, with a minimum of 5 years’ relevant work experience are also be considered for admission. Such candidates must submit a detailed curriculum vita with an application for admission. Candidates who possess extensive work experience and have not met these academic pre-requisites will be interviewed and considered on a case-by-case basis. The academic department may also conduct interviews to determine the candidate’s readiness to pursue this programme.
Experience as a Public Health Inspector/Public Health Officer will be an asset.
