Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers
This course is designed to engage prospective teachers in understanding the deeper principles underlying elementary mathematics, and increase confidence and competence in doing mathematics and teaching mathematical concepts at this level. The course will allow students to explore, discover, analyze and apply mathematics and will cover problem solving strategies; the decimal system and other number bases; standard and alternative algorithms for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of integers, fractions and decimals; simple relations and functions; geometrical shapes and figures; and the use of various manipulatives in teaching elementary mathematics. The course is intended to help the prospective early childhood education and elementary school teachers to see students’ mathematics education as an integral and fundamental part of their overall education.
Applicants seeking admissions to this short course must be sixteen (16) years and over.
