COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course introduces participants to some of the major works of world literature by examining texts which have gained a critically recognized status and which can stimulate discussion of and critical thinking about relevant human, social and philosophical issues. Participants will gain a basic understanding of literary elements, terms, concepts and genres; practice their oral and written language skills through analysis of selected texts, and engage in critical thinking, analysis and appraisal of the ideas, themes and techniques/structures developed in the selected texts. The course will be organized around discussion, analysis and practice within the genres of Fiction [short story and the novel], Poetry and Drama/Film.
